My wife is taking a Heart Healing class. In it they speak about listening from the Heart from James 1:19-27. I believe I have understood this for long time. But tonight I was shown what it looks like to me. (I tend to like to see the big picture and how things fit together).
I believe the heart is the pure self connecting with Father in Heaven. The more pure we make ourselves, the more connection we can have. In this sense, we must know that Father is Loving. That He chooses Mercy and Justice. That He wishes us to save Justice for Him alone and us to always show Mercy. (D&C 98:32-48)
Listening with the Heart is to look at what I want verses what HE would want. It is looking at it from the perspective of the subject AND through Christ’s perspective (if we can know that).
An example of this: If someone has wronged or offended you, the natural response would be to dispense our own form of judgement. However, we are called upon to “Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.” We are clearly told to forgive and love.
For me to do this and listen or speak through my heart, I must follow these series of questions before I can respond to the ills that come my way.
- I must look at the wrongs done to me from the other’s perspective: Was my understanding 100% accurate? What is the other side of the story? What is Christ’s side of the story?
- Does my desired response build up or lift the other? Does my desired response satisfy my desire for justice or mercy? What is HIS will?
- What would my response resolve? Who would my response affect? What are all the possible outcomes based on my desired response? Are any of them positive or filled with mercy?
This is as simple as that. Christ would always want us to be kind, to be peacemakers, to show love. If we hear and speak with our hearts, we would be following Christ.
“Vengeance is Mine saith the Lord.” Mercy must be our first desire. For if we show Mercy to others, we can be most assured that Mercy would be shown us from the Lord.
